Divorce rates soaring in the South

On Behalf of | Nov 20, 2020 | Uncategorized |

Does our state qualify as being in the, “South?” It is likely not something Frederick, Maryland, residents think about. Though, those married locals may start thinking about it with the recent news that the divorce rates in the South are skyrocketing, beyond the rates throughout the rest of the U.S.

By the numbers

To date, the U.S. has seen an increase in divorce filings to the tune of 34%. But, this is not a uniform increase. Instead, the South represents the vast majority of this increase. In fact, in the South, one is two to three times more likely to get a divorce than the rest of the U.S. And, surprisingly, 20% of these couples just got married within the prior 5 months.

What’s behind the numbers?

Perhaps, these numbers, especially the 20% number can be explained by 2020 and the uncertainty and upheaval our lives are going through. Experts say that, there may be some truth to this, and they point to the top factors of boredom, financial stress and parental and household disagreements that are exacerbated by the repeated lockdowns. But, 2020 may also just be speeding up the divorce process as already unhappy couples are being forced into constant contact.

The silver lining?

Of course, while these numbers are bad and divorce is seldom a pleasant topic, 2020 may be the reality check many couples needed to finally end their unhealthy marriages. It has forced couples to talk and figure out what they want their futures to look like, and whether being married really is part of that vision. And, maybe if there is one silver lining then is that post-divorce, the ex-spouses will be much happier in their new life.
